GUWAHATI: Rising Indian badminton star from Assam, Isharani Baruah, stormed into the women’s singles final of the prestigious Vietnam Open Super 100 tournament in Ho Chi Minh City, on Saturday.
The third-seeded Baruah produced a dominant performance in the semifinal, defeating Rakshitha Sree Santhosh Ramraj in straight games, 21-10, 21-18, in a contest that lasted 39 minutes.
Baruah will face Thailand’s unseeded Sarunrak Vitidsarn in the final. Vitidsarn caused an upset in the other semifinal, defeating top seed Tanvi Sharma 19-21, 20-22 in a 41-minute encounter.
The achievement is another significant milestone for Assam badminton. It is the second time within a month that a shuttler from the state has reached the final of a major international tournament. Earlier, Ashmita Chaliha clinched the Korea Masters title, underlining the growing prominence of Assam on the international badminton stage.
