GUWAHATI: Indian swimming scripted history at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games as Assam's Tirthank Pegu clinched a bronze medal in the men's 200m butterfly event on Friday.
The 17-year-old swimmer from Jorhat clocked an impressive 2:01.25 to finish third, becoming the first Indian male swimmer to win a medal at the Youth Olympics.
Egypt's Zain Ali claimed the gold medal with a timing of 1:57.88, while Vietnam's Duong Van Hoang Quy secured silver in 2:00.32.
Pegu's historic achievement comes after a narrow miss in the men's 100m butterfly event, where he finished fourth in the final. However, he bounced back strongly in the 200m butterfly to secure a place on the podium and create a landmark moment for Indian swimming.
