GUWAHATI: NorthEast United FC will look to build on their winning start to the 2026-27 MG Indian Super League season when they host Kerala Blasters FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium here on Sunday. The match kicks off at 7:30 pm.
The Highlanders began their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Mohun Bagan Super Giant at home, with Jithin MS scoring a late winner to secure all three points. They will now aim to maintain that momentum against a Kerala Blasters side that boasts a balanced mix of experienced players and young talent.
NorthEast United head coach Juan Pedro Benali, however, expects a stern test from the visitors and acknowledged the quality of their squad and coaching staff ahead of the encounter.
“We are facing a very good team. Kerala have a balanced squad, with experienced players and young talent, and they have a good coach with a clear idea of how he wants his team to play,” Benali said during the pre-match press conference here on Saturday.
The head-to-head record also points to a closely contested fixture. In 25 previous meetings, Kerala Blasters have recorded nine wins, compared to NorthEast United’s six, while 10 matches have ended in draws.
With both teams set for another demanding encounter, the Highlanders will look to make home advantage count as they seek a second consecutive victory and a positive start to their league campaign.
Benali expects a tactical battle
Benali described the contest as one that could be decided by fine margins, praising Kerala Blasters head coach Ashley Westwood and his tactical approach.
“It is like a chess game. Ashley is a very good coach, talented and smart. Kerala are a tough team,” he added.
For NorthEast United, the challenge will be to carry the confidence gained from their opening victory into Sunday's encounter without becoming complacent. Benali emphasised that the win over Mohun Bagan Super Giant was only the beginning of a long campaign, with consistency and continuous improvement remaining the team's primary objectives.
“This is only the first step in a long marathon. We need to stay focused and humble, keep our feet on the ground, work harder, avoid mistakes, and take our chances,” he said.
Benali also reiterated that team selection would be based on merit, with players expected to demonstrate their readiness and ability to meet the team's requirements.
“Age and background should not decide selection; readiness, performance and what the team needs should,” he stated.
Unity and discipline drive Highlanders:
Beyond the tactical preparations, NorthEast United's team culture has also been a key focus ahead of the fixture. The blend of experienced players and new arrivals has strengthened competition within the squad, while unity and discipline remain central to the club's approach.
Redeem Tlang, one of the club's longest-serving players and the vice-captain for the season, highlighted Benali's role in fostering togetherness and establishing standards that extend beyond the training ground.
“The responsibility and discipline he brings to the team stand out. He wants the team to be together from the very first day. You can see the players bonding well. Discipline and unity are his biggest contributions,” Redeem said.
