GUWAHATI: NorthEast United FC head coach Juan Benali has expressed confidence in his squad ahead of the new season of Indian Soccer League (ISL), describing the team as well-balanced and asserting that his players have nothing to lose as they prepare for the challenge ahead.
Addressing the local media ahead of the team's opening fixture, Benali highlighted the versatility of his players, saying they were capable of performing in different positions depending on the match situation and the opposition.
NorthEast United FC will begin their campaign on February 12 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, where they will face former champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant.
The Highlanders' coach also stressed that keeping the supporters happy would remain one of his team's primary objectives. He said he wanted fans to leave the stadium with a sense of pride in their team, irrespective of the result.
“I just want to see my fans smile. I want people to come to the stadium, watch the game and feel proud of their team. The players should give 100 per cent on the field so that the crowd returns home with smiles on their faces,” Benali said.
The return of prolific striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie to the squad is expected to provide a significant boost to the team. Benali was full of praise for the forward, describing him as one of the finest players in the Indian Super League (ISL) and emphasising the impact a player of his calibre can have on a team's performance.
“Players like Ajaraie are an asset to the team. His presence can make a difference,” the coach said.
The media briefing was also attended by NorthEast United FC CEO Mandar Tamhane, along with team captain Tondomba Singh and other players.
Announcing the club's home-ground arrangements for the season, Tamhane said NorthEast United would play their home matches in both Guwahati and Imphal. The decision is set to mark a significant milestone for football in Manipur, with Imphal scheduled to host an ISL match for the first time, offering local fans an opportunity to witness the country's premier football competition in their own city.
