CWG: Mirabai gives first gold to India
GUWAHATI, July 26: Star Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu clinched India's first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday, creating history by completing a remarkable hat-trick of Commonwealth Games gold medals.
Competing in the women's 48kg category, Chanu overcame a shaky start to deliver a commanding performance. After failing to lift 82kg in her opening snatch attempt, the Tokyo Olympic silver medallist successfully cleared the weight on her second try before raising the bar to 85kg on her final attempt.
Her successful 85kg lift not only secured the gold medal but also established a new Commonwealth Games record in the event, while simultaneously setting a new Commonwealth record.
With this triumph, Chanu has now won gold medals at three consecutive Commonwealth Games, underlining her dominance on the international stage.
