Argentina to defend title against Spain on Sunday
GUWAHATI, July 16: Defending champion Argentina will face Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on Sunday after staging a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England in the second semi-final in Atlanta on Wednesday.
England took the lead in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon finished clinically from a cross by Morgan Rogers after a bright start to the second half.
Argentina, however, dominated the closing stages and found the equaliser in the 85th minute. Enzo Fernández unleashed a superb strike from outside the penalty area after being set up by Lionel Messi.
The defending champions completed the turnaround deep into stoppage time when Lautaro Martínez headed home Messi's accurate cross in the 92nd minute to seal a memorable victory.
With the victory, Argentina have reached their second consecutive FIFA World Cup final and will take on Spain in Sunday's title clash in New Jersey.
