City gears Up for 43rd Abhiruchi Sports Day

GUWAHATI: The 43rd Abhiruchi Sports Day will be celebrated across Assam with a two-day programme beginning Thursday. The central celebrations will be held in Guwahati and will feature a mass jogging event, cultural programmes and felicitation of sportspersons, coaches and sports organisers.
September 3 marks the birth anniversary of Assam’s first Arjuna Awardee, Bhogeswar Baruah, and the day has been observed as Sports Day by the Abhiruchi Group. Addressing a media gathering, organising committee chairman Balendra Mohan Chakravarty said the celebrations would begin with a mass jogging programme at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex on Thursday. Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Biswajit Daimary, noted actor Jatin Bora and former international athlete Tayabun Nessa are scheduled to attend the event.
The celebrations will continue on Friday with an Inter-Institution PT and Dance Competition at the Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium. The felicitation ceremony will also be held at the same venue in the afternoon.This year altogether 31 players will be felicitated who represented India in various sports during the last one year.
This year, the RG Baruah Award will be presented to sports organiser Kamakhya Saikia, while Padum Chandra Boro will receive the Chidananda Das Award for Coach. Jatindra Nath Sarma of Chamata will be honoured with the Jogesh Sarma Krira Udyogi Award.
Other award recipients are: Chandra Nath Chakravarty Physical Education Excellence Award: Rabindra Chandra Sarma (Barbhag). Gopal Barua Promising Player Award: Adrit Kashyap (Yoga). RP Barooah Promising Cricketer Award: Aman Yadav (Guwahati). Sukumar Medhi Sports Organizer Award: Rupak Kumar Dutta (Golaghat). Outstanding Performance Award: Rupamoni Gorh (Mountaineer).
Special felicitation will be accorded to Panchali Roy, Principal of MVM-IV; Munna Kakati, cricketer; Santosh Gowami, footballer; Guru Govinda Rajkhowa, karate practitioner; Ranjit Kumar Deka, sports organiser; and Alkesh Baruah, weightlifter.
