GUWAHATI: Assam fought back strongly in the final session to restrict Punjab to 287 for five at stumps on the third day of their Ranji Trophy encounter at New Chandigarh on Tuesday. Punjab still trail Assam by 86 runs after the visitors posted 373 in their first innings.
Punjab appeared to be in a commanding position at 195 for two before Assam struck back, claiming three quick wickets to reduce the hosts to 237 for five. Salil Arora, unbeaten on 25, and Emanjot Singh, who scored 28, then steadied the innings to prevent further damage before the close of play.
The highlight of Punjab’s innings was a century from opener Vihaan Malhotra, who scored 103 with the help of 11 boundaries. His opening partner, Hamoor Singh, contributed a half-century of 54 as the duo put on 137 runs for the opening wicket.
Assam finally broke the partnership through Swarupam Purkayastha, who led the visitors’ fightback with two wickets for 52 runs. Mukhtar Hussain and Amlanjyoti Das claimed a wicket each to help Assam regain control after Punjab’s strong start.
With five wickets still in hand, Punjab will look to reduce the deficit on the fourth and final day, while Assam will aim to wrap up the innings quickly and secure a first-innings advantage.
