Published on September 3 GUWAHATI: The State Sports Day was celebrated at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in the city on Wednesday. The programme was organised by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department as part of the birth anniversary celebrations of Assam’s first Arjuna Awardee, Bhogeswar Baruah.
Sports Minister Biswajit Daimary attended the programme as the chief guest. Also present were Assam Olympic Association General Secretary Lakshya Konwar, Special Secretary of the Sports Department K. J. Hilali, Arjuna Awardee Nayanmoni Saikia, eminent sports journalist Subodh Mall Barua, Sports Director Ankur Bharali, Northeast Regional Director of NSS D. Karthikeyan, My Bharat Assam State Director Dinbandhu Saha, Abhiruchi Sports Day Celebration Committee Chairman Balendra Mohan Chakraborty and former international athlete Taiyabun Nessa, among others. Addressing the gathering, Sports Minister Biswajit Daimary said that several sports infrastructure projects had been developed across Assam under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to promote sports in the State. He expressed confidence that these facilities would help the younger generation pursue sports and build careers in the field. He also announced that the Sports Department would soon introduce several traditional sports in the State.
As part of the State Sports Day celebrations, the Assam Government’s State Sports Awards were also formally presented during the ceremony. Boxer Aikon Mili was honoured with the Best Sportsperson of the Year 2025 award, while para-athlete Anyatam Rajkumar received the Best Para-Sportsperson of the Year 2025 award. While Wushu athlete Nang Mingbi Borphukan received the Promising Sportsperson of the Year 2025 award, Ananta Barthakur of canoeing and kayaking and Momi Kachari of wushu were jointly honoured with the Best Coach of the Year 2025 award. The Best Physical Education Instructor 2025 award was presented to Jiban Bora of Sonitpur and Monoranjan Hazarika of Dibrugarh. Along with citations, Aikon Mili and Anyatam Rajkumar received cheques of Rs 50,000 each, while Nang Mingbi Borphukan was awarded Rs 25,000. Ananta Barthakur, Momi Kachari, Jiban Bora and Monoranjan Hazarika were each presented with citations and cash awards of Rs 30,000.
Mayank, Ababil named Best sportsperson of the Year
The Assam Government's Sports and Youth Welfare Department announced the recipients of the State Sports Awards 2026 at the State Sports Day celebration held at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor stadium in the city on Thursday.
Assam's first Grandmaster Mayank Chakraborty has been selected for the Best Sportsperson of the Year 2026 award while Para-athlete Ababil Ali has been named as the Best Para-Sportsperson of the Year 2026. Weightlifter Aichengfa Gogoi will receive the the Promising Sportsperson of the Year 2026 award. On the other hand Boxing coach Amar Kumar Deka and badminton coach Amlan Bhattacharya have been selected for the Best Coach of the Year 2026 award. The Best Physical Education Instructor 2026 award will go to Hemanta Singh of Jorhat and Niren Phukan of Dibrugarh. All of them will receive their awards in the next edition of Sports Day Celebration in 2027
