GUWAHATI: Assam’s Grandmaster Mayank Chakraborty and Woman FIDE Master Pratitee Bordoloi created history by winning the Asian Junior Boys and Girls Chess Championships (Under-20) respectively in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Mayank clinched the boys’ title with 7.5 points from nine rounds. In the final round, he drew against Russia’s International Master Artem Pingin, who finished runner-up with 6.5 points.
In the girls’ section, Pratitee also finished on 7.5 points from nine rounds to claim the continental title. She drew her final-round encounter against compatriot Sravyasree Bheemarasetty. Kazakhstan’s WFM Mariya Kholyavko finished second with seven points.
Pratitee added another medal to her tally by finishing runner-up in the rapid section. She scored six points from seven rounds, the same as Turkmenistan’s Lala Shohradova, but lost out on the top spot on the tie-break. The championship was organised by the Maharashtra Chess Association on behalf of the All India Chess Federation, under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE.
