Highlanders face early test
NorthEast United FC face a formidable challenge right at the start of their campaign, with Mohun Bagan Super Giant among the strongest sides in Indian football. Playing in front of their home supporters, the Highlanders will be eager to make a positive start and set the tone for the season.
Fourth clash of 2026
Monday's encounter will be the fourth meeting between the two sides in 2026. Their first clash came in the ISL in April, when Mohun Bagan edged NorthEast United FC 1-0 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in rain-soaked conditions.
The two teams met again in the Durand Cup semi-final in Shillong, where Mohun Bagan prevailed 4-3 in the penalty shootout after regulation time and extra time ended goalless. Their latest meeting came in the group stage of the IFA Shield in Kolkata, where the sides played out a 1-1 draw.
Bagan Dominate ISL Rivalry
The two sides have faced each other 13 times in the Indian Super League (ISL), with Mohun Bagan Super Giant holding a clear edge in the head-to-head record. The Kolkata giants have won 10 matches, while NorthEast United FC have registered two victories. The remaining encounter ended in a draw.
Benali eyes strong start
NorthEast United FC head coach Juan Pedro Benali is hopeful of an entertaining contest but remains mindful of the challenge posed by the Kolkata giants. Reflecting on the upcoming fixture, Benali said: “We are starting against an old friend from pre-season. I hope it will be a very good game and an entertaining one for the fans. It will not be easy. Mohun Bagan are one of the biggest teams in the ISL. We want to start as strongly as we can. It will be difficult for both sides, but it should be an interesting and attractive game.”
