GUWAHATI: The Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) felicitated boxer Ankushita Boro for her gold medal-winning performance at the 46th International Tammer Boxing Tournament. It was her first gold in a senior international meet.
The felicitation function was held in a city hotel and attended by the officials of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association secretary Hemanta kalita, coach Padum Boro and several other sports organizers.
Describing the triumph as a special moment, Ankushita said she had earlier won a couple of bronze medals at the senior international competitions but had never managed to finish on top of the podium.
“I had narrowly missed out on reaching the finals on several occasions. It’s not that I haven’t thought about why the gold medal took so long to come. However, I chose to leave it to time, believing that when the right moment arrived, the medal would come automatically,” she said.
Recalling her campaign in the tournament, Ankushita said the competition was part of their preparation and build-up for upcoming challenges. She had to win three bouts to clinch the title.
In her opening bout, Ankushita faced a strong opponent from Brazil and registered a convincing 5-0 victory, which gave her a major confidence boost. She subsequently defeated a boxer from Switzerland in the semifinal before overcoming her opponent from Great Britain 4-1 in the final to secure the gold medal.
Congratulating Ankushita on her achievement, Kalita said in the programme that she had been working hard to win her maiden gold medal at a senior international competition and had finally succeeded.
“I hope she will continue her good performance and win more medals for the state as well as for the country in the coming days,” he said. .
