GUWAHATI: Captain Denish Das and Sib Sankar Roy struck half-centuries to guide Assam to 235 for six on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra in Rajkot on Monday.
Opting to bat, Assam lost Nibir Deka (10), who was run out, after an opening stand of 23. Pradyun Saikia scored 15, while R. Singh contributed 29 before departing.
Denish and Roy then steadied the innings with a crucial 108-run fourth-wicket partnership. Denish scored a patient 90 off 165 balls, hitting 14 boundaries, while Roy remained unbeaten on 59 off 152 deliveries, including four boundaries.
The partnership helped Assam recover from early setbacks before Jaydev Unadkat dismissed Denish at 199, triggering a late collapse. Unadkat struck again to remove Sumit Ghadigaonkar (3) and Swarupam Purkayastha (0), both falling at 207, to finish the day with figures of three for 27.
Ravindra Jadeja and A. Yadav claimed a wicket each for the hosts.
At stumps, Roy was unbeaten on 59, with Amlanjyoti Das on 15 as Assam finished the day at 235 for six.
