GUWAHATI: Former first-class cricketer Mukut Das passed away in Guwahati on Wednesday following a brief illness. He was 74.
An all-rounder, Das represented Assam in 14 First-Class matches and made significant contributions to Assam cricket both as a player and a coach. He coached the Assam team that won the All-India title in 1993–94 and 1994–95, besides guiding the side to victory in the prestigious Madhavrao Scindia Trophy against Rest of India in 1994–95.
After his playing career, Das remained actively involved in the development of cricket in Assam. He served as coach of the Assam Vijay Merchant Trophy team and held key positions as Chairman of the Junior Selection Committee and a member of the Senior Selection Committee. He was also associated with the Veteran Cricket Association of Assam as its Joint Secretary.
In a condolence message, the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) expressed its deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and said that Das’s passing was a great loss to the Assam cricket fraternity.
