GUWAHATI: Saurashtra needed just 14 overs to bowl out Assam for 94 in their second innings and register a convincing innings-and-12-run victory in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match at Rajkot on Thursday.
Resuming their second innings overnight at 65 for seven, Assam failed to put up much resistance as Saurashtra's left-arm spinner Parth Bhut ran through the batting line-up, claiming eight wickets for just 17 runs.
Sib Sankar Roy, who scored 32, and Mohit Thakur, with 21, were the main contributors for Assam, but their efforts proved insufficient to prevent the side from suffering their first defeat of the season.
Bhut's match-winning performance marked his second consecutive five-wicket haul. He had earlier claimed five wickets in the second innings of Saurashtra's previous match against Karnataka.
The victory lifted Saurashtra to second place in the Elite Group B standings with 13 points from three matches. Assam, meanwhile, slipped to fifth place with seven points from as many outings.
