Dibrugarh Warriors name Dhiraj Goswami head coach
GUWAHATI, July 17: The Dibrugarh Warriors on Thursday unveiled their coaching and support staff for the upcoming Assam Premier League (APL) and also announced popular Assamese singer Neel Akash as the franchise's brand ambassador. The eight-team franchise-based tournament is scheduled to begin at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati on August 1, while the players' auction will be held on Sunday. Dibrugarh Warriors became the first franchise in the competition to officially announce its coaching staff. Former first-class cricketer Dhiraj Goswami has been appointed head coach, with Nilesh Sharma named assistant coach. Former Assam pacer Sujay Tarafdar will serve as the bowling coach, while Bhargav Sarma has been appointed strength and conditioning coach. Addressing the media, Goswami expressed confidence in the team's preparations and ambitions for the inaugural edition of the league. "We are planning to build a strong squad capable of producing quality cricket. Our only goal is to win the title," Goswami said. He acknowledged the limited preparation time after the auction but remained optimistic about the team's readiness. "All teams will have only 10 to 11 days after the auction to prepare. I am confident that we will be able to put together a competitive side within that period," he added. Goswami also described the APL as a significant platform for local cricketers to showcase their talent ahead of the domestic season. "This tournament provides an excellent opportunity for young and local players to display their abilities. Strong performances here could help them catch the attention of the selectors," he said. Franchise owner Arun Kumar Rai, brand ambassador Neel Akash, and Bhaskar Papukon Gogoi, Vice President of the Dibrugarh District Sports Association and advisor to the franchise, were also present at the event. Speaking about the team and the upcoming competition, Rai said the franchise is committed to promoting Assam's cricketing talent. "The APL is the perfect launchpad to uncover raw, homegrown talent and elevate Assam's cricketing stature to new heights. We are building something truly special. The Warriors are fully geared up, deeply motivated and ready to deliver a thrilling brand of cricket that will make our fans proud," he said. The franchise also unveiled its official team anthem during the programme, adding to the excitement ahead of the inaugural season.
