Online staff/GUWAHATI, Dec 6: Cricket fans at the NFRSA Stadium, Maligaon, witnessed an electrifying showdown on Friday as the RP Barooah Masters T20 Cricket tournament delivered its first tie of the season. In a nail-biting Super Over finish, Elite Veterans emerged victorious, defeating 91 Yards Club by a whisker.
The drama unfolded with 91 Yards Club being invited to bat first. Opener Situ Das played a dazzling knock, smashing 73 off 53 balls with four boundaries and three towering sixes.
Rajendra Singh added firepower to the innings with an unbeaten 59 off 45 balls, peppered with six fours and two sixes, taking the team to a competitive 160/5 in 20 overs. Elite Veterans’ bowler Imtaz Hussain stood out, scalping four wickets for just 19 runs.
In the chase, Elite Veterans showed grit but faltered at key moments. Shuhel Rahman anchored the innings with a brilliant unbeaten 57 off 33 balls, which included two boundaries and a six. Despite his heroics, the team matched 91 Yards Club’s total of 160, losing nine wickets in the process. Bichitra Baruah and Rajendra Singh made life difficult for the batters, each picking up three wickets.
With the match tied, it all came down to the Super Over. Elite Veterans batted first and managed to set a modest target of six runs. The pressure was on 91 Yards Club, but their chase fell heartbreakingly short by just one run, handing Elite Veterans a dramatic victory.
United Veterans Dominate GDUCC: In the second match of the day, United Veterans showcased their dominance with a 49-run victory over GDUCC. Batting first, United posted a challenging total of 173/7, thanks to a scintillating half-century by Abuddin Khan, who remained unbeaten on 58 off 40 balls, hitting four boundaries and three sixes. Utpal Gayari chipped in with a valuable 40 not out.
GDUCC struggled in their chase, managing only 124/5 in 20 overs. Despite a fighting knock of 40 by Diganta Thakuria, their batters failed to build momentum.
