Guwahati to host Women ODI WC opener
Online Staff/GUWAHATI, Aug 22: Guwahati will host the opening match of ICC Women ODI World Cup which is scheduled to kick off on September 30. India will face Sri Lanka in the match here at the ACA Stadium.
ICC has rescheduled the fixture of the competition after Bengaluru failed to earn clearance from local authorities. Now Navi Mumbai has replaced Bengaluru as a venue for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Friday that all matches scheduled at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium — including, provisionally, the final — will now be held at the Dr. D.Y. Patil Stadium.
The tournament dates of 30 September - 2 November remain unchanged, as do the other venues, which are the ACA Stadium (Guwahati), Holkar Stadium (Indore), ACA-VDCA Stadium (Visakhapatnam) and R. Premadasa Stadium (Colombo, Sri Lanka).
ICC chairman Jay Shah said, “While unforeseen circumstances required us to adjust the schedule and replace a venue, we are pleased to now have a line-up of five world-class venues that will showcase the very best of the women’s game. The stage is set, and I am confident this tournament will capture imaginations and inspire a new generation of fans.”
Apart from opener and a few Group League matches, Guwahati may also host the semi final if Pakistan are not qualified.
Schedule of Guwahati’s matches: September 30: India vs Sri Lanka. October 3: England vs South Africa. October 7: England vs Bangladesh. October 10: Bangladesh vs New Zealand, October 29: 1st Semi final (If Pakistan are not qualified)
