Online Staff/GUWAHATI, June 21: Assam cricket stepped into a new era on Sunday with the formal unveiling of the Assam Premier League (APL), a franchise-based T20 competition launched by the Assam Cricket Association (ACA). The event took place at the 91 Yards Club inside the ACA Stadium complex and was graced by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who officially revealed the league’s logo and trophy.
The inaugural season will feature eight teams and is set to begin on August 1, bringing a new competitive structure to the state’s cricketing ecosystem.
The participating franchises include Jorhat Stallions, Tezpur Titans, Dibrugarh Warriors, Barak Legends, Nagaon Rangers, Barpeta Braves, Guwahati Royals, and Charaideo Sunrisers. Representatives of all franchise owners joined the ceremony alongside ACA president Taranga Gogoi and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Minister Sarma described the league as a landmark moment for Assam sports, emphasizing its role in creating opportunities for emerging cricketers. He said the initiative would serve as a strong platform for local talent to develop and aim for higher levels of competition.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also underlined the league’s developmental significance, noting Assam’s untapped cricketing potential. He said the tournament would help players gain exposure and experience in a highly competitive environment. He further advised players to remain cautious and avoid any involvement with illegal or external influences.
APL Chairperson Rajdeep Oja informed reporters that nearly 4,000 players from across the state had already registered for participation. He added that the player auction is likely to take place in July.
All matches will be held at the ACA Stadium in Barsapara, with two games scheduled per day. The entire tournament will be broadcast live on Star Sports and JioHotstar.
