Bud lift GTC Challenge Trophy with crushing win
Online Staff/ GUWAHATI, July 24: In a spectacular display of both batting and bowling, Bud Cricket Club claimed the GTC Men’s Summer Challenge T20 Trophy with a dominant 154-run victory over 91 Yards Club in the final at Judges’ Field on Thursday.
Asked to bat first, Bud Cricket Club set a daunting target of 204 runs. Their innings were anchored by an explosive knock from SK Jnyanam, who scored 56 runs off 41 balls, including 4 sixes and 2 fours. He was ably supported by Sarupam Purkayastha, who hammered 55 runs off 38 balls, hitting 4 fours and 4 sixes. But it was the finishing touch from Sib Sankar Roy, whose rapid unbeaten 51 runs from just 23 balls, featuring 3 fours and 4 sixes, that propelled Bud Cricket Club to a formidable total of 203/4.
For 91 Yards Club, their bowlers struggled to make an impact. Akshay Kr Deka, Rajendra Singh, and Kunal Sarma each claimed one wicket, but the scoring rate was relentless, as Bud Cricket Club set a massive target.
In reply, 91 Yards Club’s chase fell apart almost immediately. They were dismantled for just 49 runs in 9.1 overs, a collapse that saw them lose wickets at regular intervals. Danish Ahmed and Himangshu Saraswat were the only players to reach double figures, both contributing 14 runs each.
The turning point came courtesy of Pushparaj Sharma, who ripped through the 91 Yards Club batting lineup, finishing with figures of 4 wickets for just 7 runs in 2.1 overs. Ayushman Malakar provided solid support with 3 wickets for 14 runs, while Sarupam Purkayastha capped off a stellar performance by taking 2 wickets for 8 runs.
Sarupam Purkayastha’s all-round brilliance earned him the Player of the Match award. Meanwhile, Parvej Musaraf of 91 Yards Club was named Player of the Tournament for his consistent performances throughout the competition. Sumit Kashyap of Gauhati Town Club bagged the Best Batter award, and Kaushik Giri of Bud Cricket Club was honored as the Best Bowler.
The presentation ceremony was attended by Tonmoy Jyoti Mahanta, Vice President of GTC, and former Ranji cricketer Shankar Datta Lahkar, among other dignitaries.
