Assam finish with 34 Medals in Uttarakhand
Online Staff/GUWAHATI, Feb 14: Assam wrapped up its campaign at the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, securing 34 medals—marking its third-best performance in the history of the Games. The Games officially concluded on Friday at Haldwani with a vibrant closing ceremony.
This time, Assam sent over 200 players and officials, led by former Indian volleyball team captain Abhijit Bhattacharyya, who served as the Chef de Mission. The state participated in 22 disciplines and earned medals in 11 of them: Boxing, Lawn Bowls, Wushu, Weightlifting, Aquatics, Taekwondo, Cycling, Archery, Badminton, Netball, and Athletics. Assam’s total medal haul included 3 gold, 15 silver, and 16 bronze.
Boxing, Lawn Bowls, wushu Shine:
Boxing, Lawn Bowls and wushu were the standout disciplines for Assam, where athletes brought in the majority of the medals. The boxing team earned 5 medals, which included 2 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze. In Lawn Bowls, Assam secured 9 medals, with 1 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze. In wushu Assam bagged 3 silver and two bronze.
The first medal for Assam came from Sanma Brahma in Wushu, who won a silver. Boxer Ankushita Boro contributed the first gold medal for Assam, which was followed by another gold from her teammate, Lovlina Borgohain. The third gold was clinched in Lawn Bowls by the Assam pair of Nayanmoni Saikia and Bangita Hazarika.
Historical Performance Overview:
Historically, Assam’s best performance in National Games came in 2007 when it hosted the National Games in Guwahati and surrounding areas, collecting a total of 148 medals (38 gold, 53 silver, and 57 bronze). In the 2023 National Games in Goa, Assam finished with 56 medals (14 gold, 20 silver, and 22 bronze), its second-best performance. In 2011, Assam had also secured 34 medals (5 gold, 11 silver, and 18 bronze) in Jharkhand.
Top Performers and States:
In the overall medal tally, the Services team emerged at the top, securing 121 medals (68 gold, 26 silver, and 27 bronze). Maharashtra finished second with a higher total of 201 medals (54 gold, 71 silver, and 76 bronze), despite having fewer golds than Services. Haryana clinched the third spot with 153 medals.
Performance of North Eastern States:
Among the North Eastern states, Manipur had the best showing, finishing 11th in the medal tally with 55 medals (14 gold, 16 silver, and 25 bronze). Arunachal Pradesh narrowly edged out Assam, securing 23rd place with 13 medals (4 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze). Assam finished in 24th place. Other North Eastern states like Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Sikkim finished in the lower rankings: Mizoram (28th) with 3 medals (2 gold, 1 bronze), Meghalaya (30th) with 5 medals (1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze), Nagaland (32nd) with 2 bronze, and Sikkim (33rd) with 2 bronze.
