Assam struggling after Tripura post huge total
Online Staff /GUWAHATI, Nov 8: Assam are in deep trouble against Tripura on day II of the Ranji Trophy tie in Agartala on Sunday. After Tripura piled up a massive first-innings total of 602 for 7 declared, Assam scored 67 for 4 in their first innings at stumps.
Openers Abhishek Thakuri and Pradyun Saikia offered a steady start with a 31-run stand before Thakuri fell for 9, triggering a dramatic collapse. Sarupam Purkayastha (9), Saikia (27), and captain Denish Das (11) soon followed, leaving Assam reeling. At stumps, Ghadigaonkar (3no) and Mukhtar Hussain (1no) were at the crease.
For Tripura, A.K. Sarkar impressed with two wickets, while Mura Singh and A.S. Sarkar chipped in with one apiece.
Earlier, Tripura dominated proceedings with the bat, amassing 602 for 7 declared in 143 overs. Hanuma Vihari, not out 143 yesterday, didn’t stay on the wicket too long as he got out scoring 156. His innings featured 18 fours and two sixes. Later Vijay Shankar carried the momentum with a sparkling unbeaten 150 off just 143 balls, hammering 14 boundaries and four sixes. Mura Singh (52) and Sentu Sarkar (51) made useful half-centuries to consolidate the innings.
Vijay Shankar’s innings was the highlight of the day, marked by three vital partnerships, including a 125-run stand for the sixth wicket with Rana Dutta, which helped Tripura post an imposing total and tighten their grip on the match.
