Sports world pays tribute to Zubeen

Online Staff/ GUWAHATI, Sept 19: The sudden demise of Zubeen Garg has cast a deep shadow over not just the cultural arena of Assam, but also its sporting community. Known for his versatility and unmatched contribution to music, the beloved singer had also earned admiration as a passionate sports enthusiast.
Zubeen, who was in Singapore for a performance, tragically passed away on Friday during a swimming accident in the sea. His unexpected death sent shockwaves through Assam and beyond, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans, fellow artists, and sports bodies alike.
The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) was among the first to pay tribute. In a statement issued on Saturday, ACA President Taranga Gogoi said, “Zubeen Garg was more than just a musician — he was a motivator, a believer in youth, and an ardent supporter of sports. His contribution to Assam’s cultural and sporting life is irreplaceable. We mourn the loss of a true son of the soil.”
Zubeen had previously participated in a friendly match at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati in March 2023, an event fondly remembered by sports lovers who witnessed the singer’s spirited involvement.
The Assam Sepak Takraw Association also issued a condolence message. General Secretary Bishnu Ram Nunisha noted, “Zubeen was a symbol of hope and identity for Assam. His powerful song for Khelo India inspired countless young athletes to dream big and give their best for the nation.”
