Khel Maharan: Jorhat take lead in medal tally
Online staff/GUWAHATI, April 2: The second edition of the much-anticipated Khel Maharan is off to an electrifying start at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, nestled in the Sarusajai Sports Complex of Guwahati. With over 7,000 athletes from 35 districts vying for top honors. Jorhat is currently in the lead with an impressive 15 medals, comprising 5 gold, 8 silver, and 2 bronze. Sivasagar and Kamrup (M), sitting in second and third place with 5 and 4 medals, respectively.
The opening ceremony was graced by Assam Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with the state’s Sports and Youth Welfare Minister, Nandita Gorlosa. The colorful cultural program, followed by a torch relay, set the tone for the event, as athletes, coaches, and spectators filled the stadium with a palpable sense of excitement. The torch relay itself was a momentous occasion, with former international swimmer Fariha Zaman, Olympian boxer Shiva Thapa, and National Games medalist archer Namrata Brahma all participating in this symbolic tradition.
It may be mentioned here that Khel Maharan is a platform designed to unearth hidden talent from every corner of Assam. By providing comprehensive training in various sports, the initiative aims to prepare young athletes for future national and international competitions. This year, the event has expanded to include seven disciplines—football, athletics, kabaddi, cycling, swimming, volleyball, and chess—offering a wide array of opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills.
